An Appreciative Approach to Living and Learning

When we seek to discover the best in others, we somehow bring out the best in ourselves.
~William Arthur Ward

Do you know what brings life to your school?

David Cooperrider and Diana Whitney, the developers of Appreciative Inquiry (AI), remind us, “We must look for what is good in an organization before we move forward. Where the organization wants to be is based on higher moments of where it has been.” When this happens, appreciative teachers and students are open to potential and possibilities.

What is Appreciative Inquiry?

AI helps to recognize the best in schools by affirming past and present strengths.

It helps people develop the healthy relationships that are the foundation of school success by mobilizing and building high quality connections between and among students, teachers, parents and administrators. This leads all stakeholders in a school toward a shared, strengths-based model that opens dialogue and further inquiry. Below you can listen to how this has transformed a real school.

Discover, Dream, Design, and Destiny

AI is broken down for in four component parts:

  • Discover—Uncover the good that already exists through looking at strengths and the higher moments people have. What do we want more of?
  • Dream—Envision what might be. What is our vision for the future?
  • Design—Dialogue about what should be. What do we need to do to achieve the goal?
  • Destiny—innovate what will be. How do we sustain?

Appreciative Inquiry can be a great organizational strategy with an entire school community or with specific families, classrooms, school clubs, athletic programs, parent-teacher organizations, administrative teams, and school boards.

Listen to veteran teacher Nancy McKinnis* tell how Appreciative Inquiry has increased the focus, independence and productivity of her students. Nancy currently teaches in the Leadership Department and directs the Culver Girls Academies Leadership Training Program. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Nancy sponsors the school’s Leadership Committee for Africa, a student-run organization that models collaborative leadership and provides hands on experiences for students in fundraising, event planning, research and service learning experiences in Africa.
